In 1993, with enforcement beginning in 1995, the Low Voltage Directive (LVD) was expanded to formally include electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements. These requirements are largely derived from standards developed by the IEC and CISPR, and the LVD remains mandatory legislation for all electronic products placed on the European Union market. This expansion marked a significant shift for manufacturers, requiring EMC compliance as a fundamental element of product design and certification.
However, this was only the beginning. As new technologies continue to emerge—such as OTI systems, smart grid infrastructure, G5 communications, and close-proximity radar applications—new EMC challenges arise, driving the ongoing development of standards. The IEC and CISPR remain the primary international organizations responsible for defining EMC requirements, publishing both basic test standards and product-specific standards that guide compliance.
Over time, product standards have expanded significantly to address an increasingly wide range of electronic equipment and operating environments. Commonly applied EMC standards include the IEC 61000-3 and IEC 61000-4 series for emissions and immunity, as well as CISPR 14, CISPR 32, and CISPR 16 for measurement methods and product compliance.
Absolute EMC offers a comprehensive portfolio of EMC test equipment, systems, and consulting services to support compliance with current and future EMC requirements. As standards continue to evolve, we remain actively engaged in tracking changes and guiding customers through regulatory complexity.
