The introduction of EMC requirements into the Low Voltage Directive (LVD)—adopted in 1993 and enforced starting in 1995—fundamentally changed how electronic products are designed and certified for the European Union market. Today, EMC compliance under the LVD is mandatory by law for virtually all electronic products sold within the EU.

CE Mark EMC requirements are largely driven by standards developed by the IEC and CISPR, which publish both basic test standards and product-specific standards. As new technologies continue to emerge—such as smart grids, OTI systems, G5 communications, and close-proximity radar—standards evolve to address new electromagnetic environments and coupling mechanisms.

Common EMC standards used for CE Mark compliance include the IEC 61000-3 and IEC 61000-4 series for emissions and immunity, along with CISPR 14, CISPR 32, and CISPR 16 for product requirements and measurement methods. Over time, these product standards have expanded to cover an increasingly wide range of equipment types and applications.
